Cleef & Arpels are famed, worldwide, as a high-end jewelry company
who also happen to make almost absurdly elaborate watches. None,
however, are quite so absurd or elaborate as the Midnight Planétarium
Poetic Complication, a watch that puts the Solar System on your wrist.
As you might expect, designing and hand-crafting such an absurdly intricate movement that can do so much is not something that comes cheap. The “standard” version of this watch, which comes with an alligator strap either way, will run you approximately $250,000. Yes, we said $250,000. There’s no word on what the deluxe edition will cost, but we’re going to make a wild guess here: Whatever the price is, we can’t afford it.
Movement Of The Spheres
Shown at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (translated from the French, it’s a watch convention), this watch is not just a pretty picture. In addition to telling the time with a shooting star at the very edge of the dial, each of the planets visible from Earth are represented on the watch… and their rotation around the sun is represented in real time. So Mercury rockets around the dial in 88 days, while Saturn will take twenty-nine years to complete a full rotation. Let’s see your smartwatch top that.Precious Planets
If the fact that the watch accurately tracks the location of the planets weren’t enough, and it requires a 396 part movement to pull off that particular little stunt, it’s also filled with precious and semi-precious stones carefully ground to be the perfect weight for the movement. But, if that’s not nearly extravagant enough for you, or you just really believe in overkill, you can also get a “deluxe” version of this watch that has extra diamonds. You know, because why the heck not?Planets That Cost You A House
