Today Sony announced the launch of the Xperia Tablet Z, a 10.1-inch Android tablet that will snag the title of the “world’s thinnest tablet.”
The slim Xperia Tablet Z is
just 6.9mm (0.27 inches) thick, which the company says was verified as
the thinnest 10-inch tablet at the time of the announcement. The Xperia
Tablet Z is also lightweight, coming in at just 495 grams (1.09 lbs).
That’s pretty skinny, compared with the thinnest 10-inch tablets
on the market: the Toshiba Excite 10 LE is .30 inches and 1.12 lbs;
the Asus Transformer Prime TF201 is 0.32 inches and 1.32 lbs; the iPad 2
is 0.34 inches and 1.34 lbs; the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is 0.34 inches
and 1.24 lbs.
The Xperia Tablet Z is also
the first tablet to run on the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ S4 Pro asynchronous
quad core processor, and boasts impressive water resistance: you can
immerse it into up to three feet of water for up to 30 minutes (why
you’d need to do this, I don’t know…but I bet people had fun testing
that).
Other features include a
10.1” full-HD 1920x1200p Reality Display powered by Mobile BRAVIA®
Engine 2, an 8MP HD rear camera with Exmor® R for Mobile image sensor, a
2 MP HD front-facing camera, Sony’s S-Force Front Surround 3D, Sony’s
Clear Audio+
mode, Battery STAMINA mode for improved power management and a microSD
card slot that allows up to 64GB of expandable storage. Xperia Tablet Z
will launch on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and is upgradable to 4.2 after
launch.
The Xperia Tablet Z comes in black in 16 GB ($499) and 32 GB ($599)
versions and will be available this Spring. You can also get a white 32
GB version exclusively at Sony Stores and Sony’s website.
